The Aims for P.E.

The aims of our PE curriculum at Sandford Hill Primary School are to achieve the following:

  • To develop competence and confidence to excel in a broad range of sports and physical activities
  • To ensure children are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • To engage and demonstrate a motivation to compete in sporting activities, whilst showing ‘thoughtfulness and respect’
  •  To understand and know how sport and physical activity supports children in achieving mental and physical well-being
  • To be healthy and active individuals who will go on to make good choices in the future.
An overview of P.E. at Sandford Hill

At Sandford Hill Primary School we highly value the contribution of PE and school sport to creating confident and competent children who have an enjoyment of the sports that they do. Through our curriculum, we ensure that children are exposed to a wide range of sports through the high quality lessons and clubs that we offer. Furthermore, we strive to empower our children to become healthy, independent, active and responsible members of society. This has been recognized through receiving the School Games Gold Award for school sport.

From EYFS to Year 6, we aim to provide the children with at least 2 hours of fun, exciting and active PE lessons every week and to keep the children healthy and active every day with at least 30 minutes of physical activity. This incorporates PE lessons as well as extra-curricular and break time activities. Additionally, we have allocated 30 minutes per week in curriculum time for every child to learn scootering, cycling and practice other key sports skills.

At Sandford Hill, we also strive to give as many children as possible the opportunity to compete in a variety of competitions, during school time or by representing the school in the wide range of local events that we take part in. We hope that in doing so the children will develop greater confidence, team work and show thoughtfulness and respect whether they win or lose.

PE and school sport have a high status at Sandford Hill and this is shown through our commitment to giving all children sporting opportunities. This can be seen in our curriculum and on our playgrounds and sports field but also in the sports week that we organise every two years. During these weeks devoted to sport, children have experienced many more sports that they may not have done before. From cricket and rugby coaching to climbing, tunneling and an assembly from a GB athlete, the week is always a huge success.

At Sandford Hill we are proud of our commitment to PE and sport and we endeavor to improve our provision year by year.
